BELPRE is a small rural community of 104 residents and farming families. It's located East of Lewis at the

turn-off on Hwy. 50 to Junction K-19.

The city of Belpre is also home to the "Henry Laird Library" (pictured above), the oldest library in Kansas to be funded by an endowment from Henry Laird, a prominent cattleman and philanthropist in the 1800's. The library was built in 1912 and has been a vital part of the community since. It is now integrated with the Southwest Kansas Library System to give their patrons the advantages that larger libraries offer. The library is located at 405 Wheeler Ave., P.O. Box 128 - Belpre, KS 67519 - Telephone: (620) 995-3322. They are open: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 1 - 5 p.m., Director: Joyce Gales.
