Edwards County Economic Development to Host Student Entrepreneurship Competition In November

Edwards County Economic Development, in association with the Network Kansas E-Community Partnership, announces the South Central Kansas Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge will take place in Kinsley, this November as part of the 2018-2019 Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge (YEC) Series. The competition will be held from 9:00 a.m., November 28th at Kinsley High School Auditorium. The goal of the competition is to expose Kansas middle school and high school students to entrepreneurship.

"This is the second year we have hosted the competition for South Central Kansas and we are so excited to see more and more youth taking part in the contest," said Linette Miller, Director at Edwards County Economic Development. "But we could not do it without the support or our co-hosting counties," she said.

The competition is open to 7th through 12th grade students in Edwards, Stafford, Pawnee, Hodgeman, and Kiowa counties. The five counties are just one of many locations across Kansas to host a locally organized event designed to give students a hands-on entrepreneurship experience. The competition will consist of students preparing a written business plan or executive summary and a 4-minute presentation. Students can also choose to compete in a "tradeshow" booth competition as well. The students will be competing against each other for $2,000 in prize money. The deadline to enter is November 7th.

"Students tell us every year how local entrepreneurship competitions open their eyes to new career possibilities, reward innovation and creative problem solving, and give them valuable experience presenting ideas to a panel of judges. It's a wonderful gift that the community can give their youth," says Anne Dewvall, Manager of the E-Community Partnership.

Dureing the 2017-2-18 season, 709 students from 35 communities participated in 31 local entrepreneurship competitions as part of the YEC series. The 2018-2019 academic year marks the sixth annual YEC series coordinated by NetWork Kansas and the E-Community Partnership.

The annual YEC series culminates in a statewide championship, where the top students from each local competition face off against each other for prize money and other honors. The 2019 statewide championship will be held April 30, 2019 at Kansas State University.
